Happy Halloween, creatives! There’s a beautiful thing you can observe this time of year that most of us have forgotten: Children do not get “blocked.”

We must re-learn how to play.

ROUGH TRANSCRIPT

Welcome back, creatives.
Ruthanne Reid here, author and stroke survivor, to help you get out of block
and into a daily habit of creation.
So here's a funny thing:
You're not blocked when you're a child.
You are able to draw write, sing, play,
come up with games, whatever the heck you want.
It's like magic.
It isn't magic.
You just haven't learned to hate yourself yet.
Creative, somewhere along the way, this world indicated
to us that in order to make art, whatever we produce, especially
in a first draft, has to be magnificent.
That if it doesn't come out absolutely brilliant,
even in a first draft, that you don't have the
right to create.
That's deranged.
You are human. Human beings
make art.
There is not a single place where humans are where
that is an exception. As long as there have been humans,
we have made some kind of art.
You don't need permission.
You don't need to be good enough.
You don't have to have enough talent.
The only prerequisite is, do you want to make it?
Well, if you want to make it, do.
You need to give yourself permission to draw the ugly thing,
to write the wrong scene, to absolutely create
something so ridiculous that no one is ever going to see it.
As long as you enjoy it, who cares? Make what you want,
have fun, take the perfectionism out of it.
But what I have learned, because I was also there, is
when you start to push back against those thoughts like,
ugh, this is terrible and the temptation to just stop writing
it, push back and say, no, it's a first draft.
It's fine.
It can be terrible.
I can let it be garbage.
It's fine.
What matters is it exists, because then it can be refined into something better.
If you are the person who feeds your art, who feeds
your confidence, who chooses to do that, even if initially
you don't feel it emotionally, you will
gain more confidence. That is how it works.
It is a habit that you build.
Your art is worth it, and so are you. Sit
down with me, creative, and together, let's make something
new.
