## ROUGH TRANSCRIPT

Creative, I know you're not where you want to be yet, but I need you to understand that you are also not where you were. You have made progress. I know it doesn't feel like you made progress. That's because you are falling into something that Ira Glass calls the creative gap. See, in terms of our personal subjective taste, we know what excellence is. We know what we love. We know what's effective. We know what really, really works, at least for our mindset. But what we're creating is not that. Now, you would think that this gets corrected over time because as you practice, you improve. The challenge is that your understanding of art and what makes good art also improves. In other words, your goalposts keep moving because you keep getting better at understanding art. At no point will you be able to say, "This is it. I've reached the peak. I have excelled. I'm there. I've done it. I don't have to work anymore." We all know artists who have done this. It never works well because humans don't just stay steady. You're either going downhill or you're going uphill. It's one or the other. If you stop moving forward and you stop working, you're coasting back down. So, understanding that your art is never going to 100% check every box, that doesn't mean that it's bad. In fact, there's a lot of good in your art. This is one of the reasons it's very very important that you finish your work because that gives you a chance to hold up this story or this piece of art or whatever it is and look back at old ones and go, "Oh yeah, this is way better." Because it is way better. You are getting better. Your taste and understanding of art is also improving. So it may not feel like you're getting better, but you are objectively. How do I know that? Because that's how humans work. If we practice anything intentionally, we improve at it. Even if it's not fast, we do improve. Creative, don't give up hope. You are making progress. Even if it's not really, really obvious to you at this time. Just understand your taste improves. Your understanding of art improves. So, of course, it's going to feel like you're not getting near that finish line. You're not the finish line moved, but that's normal and that's healthy. And it gives you a direction to keep moving forward. You can do this. You are improving. Creative. Sit down with me and together with hope, let's make something new.
