Creative, there’s a reason I tell you to finish your work, even the things you know you’re never going to publish. Creation is motion. We’re all on a path to learn it, and finishing our work builds markers so we can see how far we’ve come.

ROUGH TRANSCRIPT

Welcome back, creatives.
Ruthanne Reid, author and stroke survivor, here to help you get out of block and
into a daily habit of creation.
Do you know why I tell you you need to finish your work?
Even the things that you're not going to sell?
I need you to think of creation as movement.
It is not a static state.
It is not something that is made and done like a statue.
It is living; it is breathing.
It is action.
In essence, you are walking along a path.
This is where you are learning and creating.
And in the distance, the mountain that you can see, that is your goal.
That is the novel, the symphony, the thing that finally
you figure out, that you are on this daily habit of creation, and it's great,
but you have to get there.
Every time you finish a piece on that path,
it is like you are building a cairn.
You are building a pile of rocks as a memorial.
Then, as you're on this path, you can look back.
You can see how far you've come,
and that is the point.
It's not all about how far you have to go.
If that's all it was, we would all be way too discouraged to keep going
because it would feel like we're never getting anywhere, but
if you finish those pieces, including the ones you know are bad,
you get to actually look at them,
understand them for what they are, grow and learn because of them,
and then you go further down the path.
Creative, finish those things. Even if it's
absolute garbage, it's fine.
There is real psychological power to knowing that you can finish it, for one thing.
But for another, it's just gonna show you how far you've
come, and that is real encouragement.
Sit down with me, and together, in spite of the heat,
let's make something new.
