ROUGH TRANSCRIPT
Bigger idiots than you have done it.
Welcome back, Creative.
My name is Ruthanne Reid.
I'm an author and stroke survivor, and I'm here to help you get out of block and
into a daily habit of creation.
It is funny how much we tend to worship people.
Trust me, I'm going somewhere with this.
We think that the person who produced the book that we love, the movie that
we love, the music that we love, that they must be really
special, that, obviously, they have skill that nobody else around them does.
It's just them, them alone, who can make the thing.
No, here's the thing.
That kind of artistic production, where they're making something that is really,
really awesome that you get to enjoy, comes from two things.
One is hard work, because it takes a lot of hard work to
be able to do these things on command.
But two is opportunity.
You can't control that.
That comes along, or it doesn't.
I mean, you want to be ready when it does, so, you know, put the hard work in,
then when the door comes, you actually have the strength to open it, but that's another story.
Why is this important?
Well, because it means there's absolutely no reason you
can't create, as well.
No, you do not have the opportunities and privilege, a lot of these people do,
you know, trust fund babies or whatever, but that's not actually what
gets you able to create art.
We have been making art, as a species, for
a really long time.
We did it without cameras and fame and opportunities,
because just making art is human.
Babies make art.
You give them a crayon, they go right for it.
There is nothing stopping you.
I know, you don't have the same time or resources as these people do, neither do I.
But you do have the life that you live.
You have control over your day to some extent.
Even though, realistically, that means, you know, five minutes here, five minutes there.
I don't have a ton of time.
You don't have a ton of time.
It's challenging.
But we do have a little bit of time.
Doodle instead of Doom Scroll.
Write something instead of sitting there thinking about horrible things that you can't control.
Maybe what you're writing and drawing is about a character who's
dealing with things they can't control.
It's great catharsis.
The point is, you can create.
The point is that this thing that's in your head to make, you can
make it, it is not out of your reach.
Keep going.
Find other creatives and connect.
Network, learn, practice.
Doodle instead of Doom Scroll.
You will find that your whole being benefits, if you do.
Sit down with me.
My creative who is not nearly as untalented as you might fear.
And together, let's make something new.
